Astra Theatre

Located on the Canadian Forces Base at Baden Soellingen, Germany, the Astra Theatre was first operated by the Services Kinema Corporation which operated around fifty cinemas on British and Canadian military bases in Germany.

Following a contraction of the SKC cinema circuit in the 1980’s, the management of the Astra Theatre together with the Globe Theatre and Astra Theatre at CFB Lahr was taken over by the Canadian Forces in the mid-1980’s. The theatre was equipped with Bauer B8 35mm projectors with Dolby stereo sound installed at the time of the Canadian takeover. Films were sourced from the German offices of major and independent film distributors. Backstage the theatre had dressing rooms which accommodated performers for live shows.

Under Canadian management the theatre enjoyed a renaissance with good attendances. Following the collapse of the former Soviet Union, the Canadian Forces withdrew from Germany in 1993. The base at Baden Soellingen is now a civilian airport. Though many buildings survive, the Astra Theatre was demolished for redevelopment.
