Main Theatre

The Main Theatre was opened June 3, 1931 with seating listed at 489. It was located across the street and down the block from the much larger Lafayette Theatre. The Main Theatre was owned and operated by Indianapolis Co-Op Theatres.

The Main Theatre closed in 1956 and the building was destroyed by a fire which broke out in the adjacent Sherwin-Williams paint store. An addition to the General Telephone building was built on the site.

The Maim Theatre was located between the General Telephone building and the Sherwin-Williams paint store. the paint store burned in the 1960’s destroying the Main Theatre. An addition to the General Telephone ( now known as Frontier Communications) building was erected where the theatre stood.

I was unable to find an ad for the Main theatre on June 3, 1931 in the Journal and Courier, but found an ad for the New Main under new management on June 19th. There was a nitrate film fire on August 5th, 1931 according to the newspaper article below.
