The New Empire Cinema was opened in May 1937. The auditorium was on a stadium plan, with a raised stepped sction at the rear. By the 1940’s it had been re-named Empire Cinema.
Taken over by Cheshire County Cinemas chain in the 1950’s, it was later twinned with seating in the former stalls screen for 508, and in the former circle screen for 165. It was closed in May 1983. Demolished in around 1990, the Kingsway Leisure Centre was built on the site.

Interestingly, there is a new leisure center on the drawing board for Widnes which is to include a multiplex cinema. In the interim Cineworld in Runcorn is the closest theatre in the Halton district.
