The Sunset Drive In was opened in 1955. It was the second drive-in theatre built by Moultrie entrepreneur, Charlie Powell, and was done in partnership with the Georgia Theatre Company. This would be Powell’s last new theatre project. Other local theatres built by Powell included the Grand Theatre, the Moultrie Theatre, the Colquitt Theatre and the Moultrie Drive-In.
The Sunset Drive-In was known for showing “B” movies. There was a small airport grass landing strip right behind it. On the weekends, high school kids would drive down the landing strip and “park” and watch the movies without paying (or sound). It was closed in 1980.

I worked for my Dad, Charlie Powell Sr, who owned and built this drive-in theater. We installed wiring and speakers during a hot summer in the mid 1950’s. The theater was located south of Moultrie on US 319 (Bus) across from the entrance to Sunset Country Club. After the drive-in opened I would frequently bring a date to a movie on successive nights, much to the amusement of my Dad who happened to be in the box office. Charlie Powell, Jr.
The approximate address for this drive in is now 1418 N Main Street.
