The Gaumont Theatre was built by the Gaumont British Theatres (GB) chain on the site of their former Palace Cinema. It was opened on 29th November 1937. The cinema had a two storey front, built of stone. Seating was provided for 886 in the stalls and 360 in the circle. The proscenium was 45 feet wide and there were two dressing rooms.
It was re-named Odeon by the Rank Organisation on 11th November 1962. The Odeon was closed on 20th March 1971. The building was demolished and a retail building was built on the site (in 1995 a Knees store).
