The second largest town in the Slovak Republic had to wait pretty long for a multi-screen cinema. In the capital city Bratislava the first multiplex opened in 2000, in Kosice, however, it was eight years later.

CineMAX Kosice is the largest theater in the Slovak CineMAX chain. With seven auditoriums and a total capacity of 1,304 seats it is still a miniplex according to the international standards. It doesn’t reach the size of theaters in the capital city Bratislava.

The largest auditorium (Screen A) has 327 seats, the smallest (Screen G) 79 seats.

The theater opened on 29th November 2008 as a part of the extension of the Optima Shopping Center, where all major anchor tenants are settled (H&M, C&A, Marks & Spencer).

Right before the opening of the miniplex, two traditional single-screen cinemas (Druzba Cinema and Capitol Cinema) were closed. The Druzba Cinema was operated by Continental Film, the owner of the CineMAX chain, who wanted to focus itself to its miniplex.

Among the first screened movies were “Quantum of Solace”, “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” or Ridley Scott’s “Body of Lies”.

Digital video technologies used in the theater are Christie projectors (CP2000 ZX and CP-2210), Doremi cinema servers (DCP 2000) and the Slovenian XpanD-3D-system. The supplier of sound technologies was Dolby Labs (Dolby Digital EX). The digitalization of the Screen E was financially supported by the Slovak Audiovisual Fund with the sum of 31,000 Euros (about 40,000 US$) or about 44 percent of total costs.

In 2010 CineMAX Kosice was attended by 306,669 visitors on 7,584 showings. With an average attendance of more than 40 viewers per screening it is one of the more successful multi-screen theaters in Slovakia. Moreover, it is much more successful than its rival Ster Century Cinemas at the shopping center Galeria (about 11 visitors per screening).

Besides CineMAX and Ster Century a third miniplex was planed in Kosice. It was to be part of the regional AuPark shopping center in the center of Kosice. Due to the market saturation, however the spaces for six auditoriums will be probably used as a fitness center in the near future.
