Ster Century Cinemas Kosice

Ster Century Cinemas Kosice was opened on 29th October 2009 as a part of the extension of the shopping center Galeria in the second largest town in Slovakia, Kosice. The first screened movie was “Michael Jackson’s-This Is It”.

Originally the miniplex was named City Cinemas Kosice, but after the Israeli company Cinema City International entered the Slovak cinema market, it has changed its name to Ster Century Cinemas Kosice.

The mall Galeria in the Terasa district is controversial. It was founded as an extension of the grocery store Kaufland and later was extended. Its biggest shortcoming is the absence of anchor tenants, who all settled in the nearby shopping center Optima. The competitor also has the advantage in the form of a seven-screen miniplex (CineMAX Kosice). Another controversial issue is the architecture of the shopping center. Ster Century Cinemas is located on the third floor of the shopping center, just like other entertainment establishments (a casino and bowling alleys).

The miniplex in Kosice was the first multi-screen cinema operated by Slovakia’s largest movie distributor Tatrafilm, who distributes movies from Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks SKG, Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox. Later Tatrafilm opened theaters in Zilina (2010), Spisska Nova Ves and Prievidza (both 2012). In 2013 an opening of a miniplex in Levice is scheduled.

Ster Century Kosice has four auditoriums and a total capacity of 551 seats. According the Czech and Slovak reservation server Disdata, the capacity of the particular auditoriums is 133, 172, 151 and 95 seats. In every auditorium there are two places for the disabled reserved.

In its Kosice miniplex Ster Century Cinemas uses Bacro projectors with implemented Dolby 3D technology and Dolby cinema servers. The Ster Century chain is the only one in Slovakia that uses the most advanced audio standard from Dolby Labs. (Dolby Surround 7.1).

The original plans of the operator were that the cinema will show up to 24 showings daily and the yearly attendance will be about 200,000 viewers. In 2010 it showed 4,429 and was attended by 48,846 visitors. The average attendance per performance was only eleven viewers what is the worst outcome of all multi-screen cinemas in the Slovak republic. This may indicate that the miniplex doesn’t pay a fixed rental and the shopping center receives only a share of its revenues.

Besides CineMAX and Ster Century a third miniplex was planned in Kosice. It was to be part of the AuPark shopping center in the center of Kosice. Due to the market saturation, however the spaces for six auditoriums will be probably used as a fitness center in the near future.
