New Hippodrome Theatre

Viewing: Photo | Street View

Located in the city centre, near the Southampton Guildhall. The Grand Theatre was opened in 1898 and was designed by a Mr. Jenkins. It was soon equipped to screen Bioscope films. Films of local events were screened on 31st May 1902. On 2nd July 1913, five short Kinemacolour films were exhibited.

The Grand Theatre was closed during World War II, and after the former Prince of Wales Theatre/Hippodrome Theatre was destroyed by German bombs in November 1940, the Grand Theatre was re-named New Hippodrome Theatre when it re-opened around 1950.

The New Hippodrome Theatre was closed in 1959, and was demolished in the 1960’s.
