Viewing: Photo | Street View

The 4-Mile Drive-In opened on April 1, 1950, featuring “On an Island with You” with Esther Williams and Peter Lawford. The second feature was “Strawberry Roan” with Gene Autry. This theater was part of the L.H. Ayers Theatres chain of drive-ins, along with the Summerville Drive-In and St. Andrews Drive-In, and the Holly Hill Drive-In in Holly Hill, SC. They were advertised has “Charleston’s Only Home-Owned Drive-Ins”.

The 4-Mile Drive-In had a car capacity of 200 cars and featured an outside patio for patrons without cars. It closed in December, 1957. The drive-in was demolished and redeveloped for retail.

The above address according to Google Maps points to the corner of Meeting Street & Pittsburgh. The diamond-shaped drive-in was located further south with the entrance across from what is now Discher St. (Formerly Birdie Garrett St.)
