A wonderful example of a fantastic Edwardian period picture house. It opened as an entertainment centre known as the Kursaal, and it also contained a 120 seat cinema known as the Electric Theatre which opened on 7th October 1911.
The main hall was converted into the Dome Cinema by 1921 and it originally contained 875 seats. The former Electric Theatre then became a restaurant.
The building underwent a full heritage Lottery funded restoration/renovation, closing in June 2005 and re-opening on 6th July 2007 with 580 seats in the original auditorium and a second 118 seat cinema in another part of the building.
The Dome Cinema is a Grade II* Listed building.

It kind of looks like a lighthouse. Neat!
Well it took a year longer than originally planned, but the Dome Cinema has finally re-opened on 6th July 2007 following its multi-million £’s restoration.

Without a doubt my favorite cinema in the whole world. My craving for Maltesers comes from the beautiful concession stand in front of the doors. Watership Down may have been my first movie there. And endless reruns of Grease in 78-79.
For the longest time there was a poster in the lobby for Heaven Can Wait with Warren Beatty in his grey track suit. It never seemed to go down.
I’m so glad it’s up and running again.
