Located in the County Durham mining town of Horden. The Empress Electric Theatre was opened in December 1910. It was operated by Richard Thurston. It had a 36 feet wide proscenium.
It was closed for a while in 1926 when some alterations were carried out. By 1930, it was mainly used as a live theatre and had been re-named Empress Theatre. However, it was soon equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system and returned to films.
In the mid-1950’s it was equipped with CinemaScope and the screen size was 27 feet wide, with the proscenium widened.
The Empress Theatre was closed around 1973 and was converted into a bingo club. In the 1980’s, it was destroyed by a fire.
