Roxy/Roxy Continental/Silverhill Picture House

Located in the Silverhill district of St. Leonards-On-Sea, close to Hastings, East Sussex. The Silverhill Picture House was opened on 29th November 1913. Initially it operated as a cine-variety house.

Around 1939, it was re-named Roxy Cinema. In 1948, it began screening art-house films and became the Roxy Continental Cinema, the first film screened under this policy was the (X) Certificate “An Artist with the Ladies”. By 1959, it had become the Roxy Cinema once more, but continued playing foreign art-house films. In 1960 the owners Cranfield Cinema Co. accepted ‘an offer they could not refuse’ for the building, and the Roxy Cinema was closed on 30th April 1960 with “Mogambo”.

The building then stood empty for the following nine years until it was demolished in September 1969 and a Carpetland store was built on the site.
