Located in Stornoway, Ross & Cromarty, on the Isle of Lewis off the west coast of north Scotland. The Playhouse was opened around 1936. It was operated by A.G. Matthews Circuit of Glasgow. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. By 1944 it was part of the J.B. Milne Theatres chain of Dundee.

The Playhouse was still open in 1966, but had closed by 1980. The building is used today by the Royal British Legion.

A Presbyterian minister pronounced a curse on the cinema for showing “Jesus Christ, superstar”. Technically it was due to breach of fire regulation but the curse was believed to be the true cause of the Playhouse closing weeks after the curse.
