Built in 1947, by James and Mabel Ellett, and originally called the Ellett Theatre, this small but stylish Streamline-meets-Pueblo style theater has been in continuous operation for more than half a century. The tiny Wayne Theatre has given its town of Bicknell, Utah the distinction of being the smallest town in the US with an operating movie theater.
The Wayne Theatre (as it was renamed in 1967, after the county the theater sits in) has changed ownership twice and is currently owned by Nanette and James Anderson, who in 1994 renovated the theater; adding a state-of-the-art sound system, new projection system, and heating.
In 1999, a grant from the Utah State Historical Society helped provide much-needed structural and exterior repairs to the Wayne Theatre. Today, the theater screens second-run features, and is host to the Bicknell International Film Festival.
