“The historic Rio Grande Theatre, a centerpiece of downtown Las Cruces revitalization, has been named to the National Register of Historic Places.
The theater, built on Main Street in 1926, is one of the oldest theaters in the state and the last surviving two-story adobe theater in the country, according to the building’s owner — the Dona Ana Arts Council.
Being named last month to the national registry means the theater will be eligible for certain federal grants, tax credits and assistance in developing programming.
It also brings a measure of prestige and legitimacy to the theater, not to mention the city.
“We were very excited to get on the national registry. To be recognized as a historic building really should help in getting people interested in renovating the theater,” Arts Council executive director Amy Johnson said.
In October, the theater was named to the State Historic Register.
It joins 77,000 other sites already on the National Register, as well as 13 other structures or places in the Las Cruces area".
