The Princess in Birstall in June 2005

Located in Birstall, West Yorkshire, 7 miles southeast of Leeds. The Princess Picture Palace was opened in 1919. It was listed in the 1931-1962 Kinematograph Year Books and had a proscenium width of 24ft and a Western Electric(WE) sound system. From 1950 the capacity is given as reduced to 702. It was closed 26th August 1967 with Hayley Mills in “The Family Way”. It was converted into a bingo club. The building is now used as a dance school - from pictures on their website a false floor seems to have been inserted but the barrel-vaulted ceiling appears to be still extant. It also operates as a dance hall named The Venue.
