Criterion Picture Theatre

The Majestic Pictures was opened 1st February 1915. A notable feature were the two stone lions which guarded its entrance. It had a 37ft wide proscenium. Around 1929 it was equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system. It was closed 29th June 1935 for renovations to be carried out.

It re-opened 5th August 1935 and was re-named Criterion Picture Theatre. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.

The Criterion Picture Theatre was closed 14th June 1969. It has been demolished. The two stone lions were rescued and are now situated in Hornsea Memorial Gardens.

Last week I visited Hull, City of my birth, after almost 30 years. During my visit I was driven to Hornsea and, on the way back, I happened to look into the Memorial Gardens and there were the Lions!
