In Milford Haven, on the south west coast of Wales, the Cinema was created out of a market hall by H. J. Scard Jr, whose family was involved in travelling funfairs. It is not known when it opened; it was not listed in the 1914 Kinematograph Year Book, but it was in the 1927 edition. (In these books the address was given as Market Square.)
By the 1934 edition the cinema had been renamed the Astoria Cinema and a Western Electric(WE) sound system had been installed. The 1953 edition still lists the ownership as Scard’s Cinemas Ltd. and, additionally, gives the proscenium width as 31ft 6ins, a stage depth of 19ft and eight dressing rooms (stage shows were a regular feature). There was also a snack bar.
The Astoria Cinema was still open in 1966 when it hosted bingo on Wednesdays. It closed as a cinema in the late-1960’s. By the time I visited, in June 2006, the building was occupied by Top Ten Bingo. However, that closed on 24th March 2013. On 2nd October 2014 it became a bar & restaurant.
