Star Theatre

The Star Theatre opened March 3, 1938 with Carol Lombard in “True Confession”. It shared its building with a pool hall. It closed in the late-1960’s, but was reopened in 1979, remaining in operation until 1985.

The building was spruced up in 2000 to appear in the movie “My Dog Skip” but the theatre remained closed. In 2008, heavy rains caused a partial collapse of the roof. One attempt to restore the building was ended by a fire in October, 2016.

Nevertheless, local citizens continue to work toward the repair and reopening of the theatre through The Star Theater & Civic Auditorium Restoration Committee.

Per the Simpson County Historical & Genealogical Society Facebook page: “Johnny Knight did the paint job on the theater when Danny Collins reopened it in 1979.”

It was once known as the Star Cinema, but most likely closed in late-1985 when the Broadcountry Cinema 3 opened in nearby Magee. Newspaper articles say that it was still open in 1985.
