Address was 1. For some reason, this location was a vacant lot until the theater was built. It does not appear on the 1921 map. The 1940 map shows it as a two-story brick building right on the corner of E Spring and S Franklin. There is a large balcony with a concave curved front, and a stage is shown. The theater was air conditioned.

All the buildings on the side of the block facing the courthouse were destroyed many years ago, but the back wall of the theater is still attached to the building to the south.

Construction was underway on the Citadel Theatre in the fall of 1921. The project was mentioned in the September 22 and October 20 issues of The Bloomfield News. I haven’t found the opening date, but the house was definitely in operation by January 26, 1922. John B. Flater was the owner of the Citadel, and his son Myers Flater was the first manager of the house.

Uploaded a 1989 newspaper photo of the Citadel celebrating the 50th anniversary of when Gone With the Wind played there.

The Citadel Theatre opened on December 26, 1921 with the D.W. Griffith film Way Down East. The November 8, 1968 issue of Boxoffice reported that the Citadel Theatre in Bloomfield had been gutted by a fire while undergoing renovation. Presumably repaired, as it was still open in 1989.
