Gem Picture Hall

In Tring, Hertfordshire, the Unity Hall was situated above the Co-operative Society’s shop. There was a 19ft deep stage that was often used for plays.

During 1912 a group called the Enterprise Cinema Syndicate made considerable alterations and turned the hall into a picture house. This opened as the Gem Picture Hall on Saturday 23rd November 1912.

However, in 1916, E. J. Darvell, the licensee, decided to replace it with a purpose-built Gem Cinema. That opened in August 1916 (see separate Cinema Treasures entry), and the Gem Picture Hall closed.

By the 1980’s the building was in use as banqueting rooms. More recently it has become home to Olive Limes Indian restaurant.
