Washington Hall

Washington Hall was constructed in 1844, and was a fairly large and quite tall two story brick building with some retail on the ground floor, and a large auditorium above.

By 1896, the ground floor had become city offices, but the hall remained under private operation. The capacity is taken from the 1905 Cahn Guide, when it was under the management of the Lawler brothers. The 1909 map shows that ‘Moving Pictures’ were being shown. That designation does not appear on later maps, and sometime between 1914 and 1922, the ‘Washington Hall’ name disappears.

The building continued to be used as city offices, and the hall was used at least through the 1950’s for wrestling, dances, etc. The structure was demolished sometime in the mid-1960’s, and replaced with a drab little park that mostly serves as access to a parking lot.
