Palace Cinema

Pentre Broughton is a formerly industrial village in the community of Broughton in Wrexham County Borough.

The Palace Cinema opened on 7th December 1936. It had been built for Mr T. Williams, of Broughton Palace Picture Co. Ltd. There were 500 seats and two changes of programme each week. It was equipped with a BTH [British Thomson-Houston] sound system.

The Palace Cinema closed for six weeks from 9th May 1953 for a major refurbishment. New projection equipment and an updated BTH sound system were installed, together with a CinemaScope screen. The seating capacity was reduced to 400. The screen measured 22ft by 12ft; the proscenium was 24ft wide. The Palace Cinema re-opened on 6th July 1953, showing films about the Queen’s coronation and the conquest of Everest.

Despite this investment, the Palace Cinema closed on 5th December 1959 with “The Vikings”, starring Kirk Douglas, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis.

The building went into industrial use, but was demolished around 1970.
