Workmen's Hall

Located in Abercynon, Glamorganshire. The Workmen’s Hall was opened on 18th December 1905 and was designed by local architect F. Gibson. It had a large meeting room with 1,700-seats, a smaller meeting room with 300-seats and a theatre with 1,205-seats which had a 25ft wide proscenium. Soon after opening it was screening films in the theatre. It was the first of the three cinemas in the town to be equipped with sound in 1929 when a Western Electric(WE) system was installed.

In the early-1960’s it became a part-time bingo club, with films continuing on other nights into the 1970’s. It screened its final films by 1980. The building fell into a state of disrepair and was badly damaged by a fire in 1995. The local council had plans for the building to be demolished and a car park was planned for the site. But nothing happened following demolition and it is a vacant site today.
