Roxy Theatre

The New Roxy Theatre was constructed in 1941, and was a budget Streamline Moderne style building constructed out of cinder block. The center portion had some flair, being rounded with generous areas of glass block on the second floor. A small vertical sign hung over the entry. Both sides of the facade had small shopfronts.

The Roxy Theatre closed in 1961, but apartments in the front portion, which were apparently original to the design, were used until recently. The auditorium portion was long ago demolished, although the foundation can still be seen on satellite photos.

Even on the oldest street-views, the building looks quite scabby and neglected. It was repainted around 2016, but is basically derelict, with a massive hole in the roof.

Ramsey had both a Roxy Theatre and a New Roxy Theatre, the latter built after the war. Here’s an announcement from the October 23, 1946 Film Daily: “Proffers' New Roxy Open

“Ramsey, Ill.—The New Roxy Theatre, seating 300, has been opened by Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Proffer.”

The April 20, 1946 Showmen’s Trade Review had said that Woodrow Proffer of the Roxy Theatre, Ramsey would build a new house as soon as material became available, and that it would be called the new Roxy.

The Independent Film Journal of February 5, 1955 reported that a wide screen and new projection and sound equipment had been installed in Woody Proffer’s 280-seat Roxy Theatre at Ramsey.

This must be the ‘New’ Roxy, then, although obviously there’s only room for Roxy on the vertical.
