Regent Theatre

The Regent Theatre was in operation prior to 1897. It would appear that prior to 1917 it began showing films. C.B. Snell was the operator at that time. He also took over the operation of the Star Theatre in 1920.

At some point it was operated by Butterfield Theatres. The Regent Theatre closed in 1931 when the Ionia Theatre opened further along the street.

By May 2023 it was operating as the Blue Water Cafe.

Uploaded a photo from the 1920s. There were two films called The Hottentot with similar subject matter. I can’t read the signage well enough to determine whether the one in the photo is from the 1922 or 1929 film.

I would say it is the 1929 version of “The Hottentot” starring Edward Everett Horton. The V-shaped standing advertising board has a poster for that version.
