Broad Street Theatre

Built as a showplace for the Centennial Exposition of 1876. This Moorish style theatre was designed by architect brothers Bolossy Kiralfy & Imre Kiralfy. The facade featured two Moorish style multicolored domes at each end of the building, and windows framed in the same style. Inside the auditorium there were boxes adjoining the stage which were on three levels. Initially it staged extravaganzas and musical comedies. Alterations were carried out in 1904 to the plans of architect Rush S. Plowman.

It went over to movies in the 1920’s. Probably never equipped for sound films, it became a swanky playhouse attracting top named actors and actresses of the 1930’s. On August 20, 1937 a demolition permit was issued and by December 1937 it had been demolished. The site became a parking lot, part of which was incorporated into the structure of the Hershy Hotel which was built in1983.
