Here is a photo of the interior from the 1970s.
I always wondered where Vittorio De Sica’s “Ladri di biciclette” (“Bicycle Thieves” in the U.K., “The Bicycle Thief” in the U.S.) opened in London. Now I know. It was at the Curzon.

Curzon Cinemas are celebrating their 70th Anniversary this year which is a major achievement for an Independent cinema which is still run by the Wingate Family. As part of the Anniversary they are screening a number of special seasons which have included: Burlesque Season, Italian Neo Realist Season, Kenji Mizoguchi season and the current French season which will be running until the 30th September.
A very civilized movie going experience…A coffee bar instead of the usual concessions with generally long runs of international cf Bergman, Pasolini, Malle fare…Took my mom to see Louis Malle’s Vanya on 42nd St one New Year’s eve (keep in mind that most cinemas in the UK close on NYE)…The cinema has survived over 40 years throwing in the odd revival (2001 2 years ago) when most West End screens wouldnt go near them and was refurbed and twinned last year with the second screen a real mini (under 100 seats) able to second run main features and the main screen still impressive
Both Curzons tend to run great repertory double features on Sunday afternoons
My notes show that I saw Louis Malle’s unforgettable “Lacombe, Lucien” when in London (visiting from the U.S.) in July, 1974.
