The building has been donated to a non profit. It has been awarded a grant for an interior design study by the National Register of Historic Places. Once completed, a fund raising campaign will ensue in order to restore the Uptown as a venue for concerts, plays, classic or non-mainstream cinema, etcetera.

We made a short video of the theatre and its surroundings:

Sedalia looks very empty. In fairness, it was a Sunday and there’s a lot of rebuilding going on, so downtown was unusually quiet in November. Take your point about Google and the street number Chuck, thanks.

What a gorgeous theatre! The blue trim really makes the details of the building pop. Hope they manage to locate windows on the side or something to keep the facade intact if they convert the building into apartments.

If you are getting the address from Google, Google is wrong on the address as usual. The address for the theatre is 225 S. Ohio St. It is located next door to the Game Zone which is 229 S. Ohio St. According to the Post Office there is no 287 S. Ohio St. So the address in the header of 225 S. Ohio St. is correct.

I think it’s 287 S. Ohio St.

We talked to one of the builders working on the property opposite. Apparently the plan now is to convert the building into apartments since the plan for a Scott Joplin museum fell through. This may mean putting window’s into Robert Boller’s Art Deco facade.

Also blogged about the building here: View link

Ken posted the address for the Uptown 4 years ago, 225 S. Ohio Ave., so maybe now that Ken does the updates he will make these changes.

As Chuck posted only five years ago, the architect was Robert O. Boller. At opening, the Uptown Theater was owned by J.T. Ghosen.

I found the following on this theater:

“The Uptown Theater opened in the summer of 1936 and is an excellent example of art deco architecture. The theater cost $50,000 had 800 seats, a balcony, and RCA Victor sound. This was Sedalia’s first air-conditioned theater The ticket booth features frosted Art Deco patterns on glass and the theater foyer has original light fixtures and inner vestibule doors”.

The theater currently is being offered to the Scott Joplin Foundation for year round operations. Details are currently being worked out. The building has some problems and a grant is being worked out to redo the building. As more information is forth coming, I’ll post the details.
