The Gateway was originally planned as a six screen. Following the closing of the Queen, the Sandcastle and the Trolley North, the plans for the Gateway were revived and the theatre became an eight screen theatre.

It was opened in 1993 by Consolidated Theatres and was later taken over by Cinema Star Theatres. The independent Red Carpet Cinemas chain took over in January 2006.

It was renovated in early-2010, and was reopened by Cinemark.

Red Carpet Cimenas went bankrupt in October 09 and the theater is presently closed and has been stripped out. Cinemark Theaters has leased the property and plans on doing a full renovation. It was always a lousy theater so this will be welcomed by everyone in town!
