When Loews Cineplex opened the South Towne Center Cinemas in 1990, it was the largest theatre complex in the Salt Lake area at that time. It was located at the corner of the parking lot of the South Towne Mall and featured ten well appointed and designed auditoriums seating 2358 patrons.

The auditoriums ranged in size from 318 seats in the larger auditoriums to 189 in the smaller ones. Six of the auditoriums featured Dolby Stereo and digital was later added.

The lobby and concession areas featured refined marble floors and walls, there were bright wall decorations and multilevel ceiling lighting.

The theatre was closed in February 2001 as part of Loews' bankruptcy. It was gutted in 2002 and is now used for retail.

ghamilton, it may have to do with the number of screens in that area of the Valley. You have the Movies 9 in Sandy, Sandy Starship 4 (closed now), Carmike 12 in West Jordan, Cinemark 24 at Jordans Landing, West Jordan, the Century 16 at Union Heights in Sandy and the Megaplex 17 at Jordans Crossing.
