Capitol to get new life as a luxury movie theater
DAVENPORT, IA — The deep history of the Capitol Theatre is about to take another turn with plans to convert it into a luxury theatre. Shuttered since 2010, the plan is to replicate the work done on St. Louis' Moolah Theatre which means upscale touches like leather couches and loveseats.

Russellville Roxy opens its doors again
RUSSELLVILLE, AL — After 40 years in darkness, the Roxy Theatre was reopened last week for a documentary film screening. With a new projection system, there’s more to come too.

Alamo Drafthouse announces first L.A. location
LOS ANGELES, CA — After considering various locations around Los Angeles, Alamo Drafthouse has settled on a location at the new downtown development, the Bloc, set to open next year on the site of the former Macy’s Plaza. The Metro-friendly location will feature nine screens with about 800 seats total. In addition to discussing this exciting arrival, the Los Angeles Times also discusses how with art houses like the new Sundance Cinemas and the Downtown Independent, Angeleno cinephiles have more and more options of theatres to visit, old and new.

A first for ice cream at the cinema
LONDON, ENGLAND — Lucky theatregoers are the Vue West End were handed free glow in the dark ice cream pops designed by Bompas and Parr for Wall’s Ice Cream. It’s still being tested but the goal is to have a product that you can see but won’t distract you during the movie.

Sylvia makes jump to digital
YORK, SC — They took their time but the Syvlia Theater eventually set themselves up for the future with the purchase of a digital projector. They raised $13K through Kickstarter to help the cause and are back to presenting Hollywood favorites. Live music on the weekend will be coming back soon too.

Georgia Theatre changes hands
ATHENS, GA — Wilmot Greene has owned the Georgia Theatre for 10 years and weathered the greatest storms of all including the theatre burning down five years ago. Now he’s sold it to a group of investors, Agon Sports and Entertainment. Don’t expect big changes though. The formula of bringing in top musical acts has been working and with the same group of employees, the experience will be preserved.

Renewing the Princeton Garden
PRINCETON, NJ — The Garden Theater isn’t the only local classic theater turning heads after reopening two months ago. Renew Theatres has been revitalizing cinemas across the Philadelphia suburbs like the Hiway in Jenkintown, the Ambler, and the County in Doylestown.

Tricycle Theatre in Jewish film festival row over Israeli funding
LONDON, ENGLAND — The Tricycle Cinema is refusing to host UK Jewish Film Festival as it is sponsored by the Israeli Embassy. They have offered to contribute funds to make up for the sponsorship but strongly oppose to support any initiative with support from either side in the Middle East conflict.
