Ambassador theaters make jump to digital
RALEIGH, NC — Ambassador Entertainment wanted to wait until all the kinks were out with digital technology and has finally made the conversion. The Rialto and other local cinemas like the Colony, Six Forks and Mission Valley have all made the switch. The theaters can now even be rented for $60 outside of operating hours.

Cedar Creek Lake’s only movie theater closes
GUN BARREL CITY, TX — MovieStar Cinema is no more after an abrupt closing last week. No official word has been given from the former operator on the reason for its closing but the building has construction issues that need to be repaired along with digitization. With the rising costs, its future is unclear but there is a strong local following as it’s one of the few entertainment options nearby.

Tupper Lake’s State Theater fights to go digital
TUPPER LAKE, NY — Locals aren’t giving up on the State Theatre, a nearly 100 year-old treasure that’s in need of a digital projector to keep going. The Tupper Lake Arts Council is rallying for donations and hosting fundraisers at the theatre to raise $90,000 for the project.

Two entertainment center projects square off in Kyle
KYLE, TX — A city of less than 30,000 with no cinemas may have two new large ones by next summer. Competing projects at the Villages of Kyle Shopping Center and Kyle Towne Center are both rushing to make it through the approval process in a city that’s not sure if it can support each of them. Both projects include a bowling alley and arcade in addition to the theater.

Walmart expansion cancellation leaves shuttered theatre behind
FALMOUTH, ME — Locals weren’t completely upset with the closing of the Regal Cinemas last year because they were promised a larger Walmart in its place. Now that Walmart has cancelled those plans, the closed theater is just left sitting there with no word on the future of the site. It was the only cinema in town.

Oakland’s New Parkway Theater prepares for Karma Cinema Month
OAKLAND, CA — The New Parkway Theater is launching Karma Cinema Month in August to benefit local non-profits. 30 percent of their receipts will go to organizations like Alameda County Community Food Bank and College Track. And what’s even better for patrons? They can pay what they want. Another inventive idea to integrate a theater in a community.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Following in the footsteps of the TCL Chinese Theatre down the block, the Pantages is selling its naming rights. They’re giving Front Row Marketing Services sixth to find a buyer.

Midtown Cinema continues to build on its mission
HARRISBURG, PA — Rumors were swirling months ago that the end was near for the Midtown Cinema when they let go of some long time managers. However, the owners have made a substantial investment in bringing the theatre up to today’s standards and the new team is seeking advice from the community on what kind of programming and amenities they’d prefer. It looks like the downtown fixture will continue to be integrated into an increasingly vibrant local arts scene.
