There was other screenings of the silent shorts(unknown how long the screenings went for?), they have about 2500 people a day watching the silent shorts. Among the people watching the first screening was Georges Melies, magican, direcror of the theatre, and director of “A Trip to the Moon, and other movie shorts. Martin Theatre opened in 1941. Martin theatre was hit by lightning and caught fire in the summer of 1981, and the interior burnt down. The front and side(and back?) walls, and theatre sign(marquee?) are still there. The remains of the theatre were seen brielly on an episode of American Pickers(episode – Sweet Homes Alabama). The theatre has been reopened as an outdoor theatre showing movies and concerts and live productions with canvas sheets over the top where the roof and ceiling used to be.
There is footage of Camden Drive-in on Youtube(drive-in blues, towards the end). I think a little of the footage was used on a episode of American Pickers, and a still picture/photo as well(i forget which episode?).
It is believed that Hoyts operated it’s Southlands complex in parthership with Ace Cinemas. Despite Southlands Shopping Centre signage stating this, the parthership never existed.
The Piccadilly Theatre opened on 10/3/1938 opened by His Excellency Lieut. Governer Sir James Mitchell K.C.M.G. (at 8pm) showing “Paramount Airmail News from Overseas”, “Turn off the Moon”, and “I met him in Paris”.
