The Capitol Theatre opened on January 14, 1935 with Anna May Wong in “Chu Chin Chow”. It was destroyed by fire in 1946. It was rebuilt in 1948 and was part of Newfoundland Amusements (Famous Players). The 848-seat theatre closed in 1977. It has been converted into a radio and TV studio for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

Looks like its gone under a conversion – facade all redone just a small entry door with a Canadian Broadcasting Logo on it. The other end of theb building faces another street loks like an office tower undergoing interior renovations.

As reported in the above two posts, the former Capitol Theatre has since been renovated to serve as studios for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s radio and TV operations in St. John’s.
Boxoffice of January 24th, 1948 reports that the Capitol theatre was destroyed by fire and was to be rebuilt by Newfoundland Amusements, who leased it to Famous Players.
Opened on January 14th, 1935. Grand opening ad posted.
