Oened on October 4, 1929, this magnificent Art Deco/semi-Atmospheric style movie house originally had a seating capacity of 1,442. It was closed on September 29, 1971 with The Rolling Stones in “Gimme Shelter”. It became an art-house cinema screening French language movies which closed in 1987. It was renovated in 1993 and since 2001 hosts movies and shows.

I visited this place several times, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. I remember seeing Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America” here in a complete integral version at a time when several bits were cut from prints in the U.S. Inside and out, the theatre is a classy marvel, as is the neighborhood. It reopened shortly after as a French-language repertory theatre that lasted until 1987 operated by Micro Cinema. It reopened as a live theatre in 2001 with some movies.
