Thunderbird Drive-In

Located on S. Main Street at Konnoak Drive SW. The Skyview Drive-In was opened on April 9, 1948 with Robert Paige in “The Red Stallion”. It was first operated by American Theatres Inc. and from 1961 operated by B & B Theatres. On December 15, 1967 it was renamed Thunderbird Drive-In reopening with Don Knotts in “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken”, Mary Ann Mobley in “Get Yourself a College Girl” & Paul Newman in “Torn Curtain”. It had a car capacity listed at 600 cars. ABC Southeast Theatres operated the drive-in from 1975 until its closing.

The Thunderbird Drive-In closed on November 16, 1986 with Farrah Fawcett in “Extremities” & Linda Blair in “Savage Streets”. It has since been demolished. There is a new subdivision where the drive-in once stood.

There’s a gorgeous aerial shot, circa 2000, of the forest reclaiming the old Thunderbird site.

The poster wrote that it was on Konnoak Drive right before it meets South Main Street.
