Sunset Theatre to reopen
WELLS, BC — Historic Theater set to open!
The Sunset Theatre in Wells, BC is set to open its doors after nearly 25 years of silence.
Built in 1934 by Gold Quartz Mine proprietor Fred Wells, the Sunset Theatre has recently been restored to reflect its original glory. With a new foundation to rest on and a new roof to keep patrons from being rained on, the Sunset has undergone major changes to accommodate professional theatre, film and live music.
From Musicians to Theatre to Independent Film, to a Weekly Cabaret series, the inaugural season for the Sunset Theatre is geared to entertain, engage and entice a new audience to the Cariboo. There is also a Saturday Morning Movie series geared to the younger crowd.
This project has been seven years in the making. For the past six summers, Karen Jeffery along with her husband Dave Jeffery, have been renovating and restoring the theatre inch by inch.
The interest in the theater has grown with each new nail and each brush stoke. After three trial performances last summer, it was clear it was time to open the doors even though there is still some work that needs to be done.
This is has been a life long dream and vision for Artistic Producer Karen Jeffery (nee Planden.) Karen’s career has spanned over 20 years in professional theatre, most recently as the Executive Director of the Vancouver Fringe Festival. Dave Jeffery has been a highly regarded High School Drama Teacher for the Calgary Board of Education, with more than 60 of his former students having gone on to further their careers in professional theatre. Together they hope to create, inspire and present world class theatre.
The summer season runs from July 8th to August 25th inclusive.
