Followup on yesterday’s story:

The Golden State Theatre in Monterey is being offered for sale. It is a semi-atmospheric design by the Reid Brothers with a Spanish castle theme, a large lobby with a historic mural and elaborately decorated “beamed” ceiling. Owner Warren Dewey bought the 1926 theater in 2004 and carried out a restoration that was begun by local residents, bringing back its original character and adding 21st century technology.

This is a rare opportunity to own a real movie palace in working condition, with convenient parking, a pleasant atmosphere, and an affluent demographic, in the California coastal city of Monterey.

The theater has now grown into an important showcase for film and live events in the area. It has presented more than 25 large-scale live performances and touring music shows in the last 2 years, plus countless local events, meetings, movies and concerts, as well as several major events planned for 2008. The theater will remain open through the transition to new ownership.

A new owner is being sought with the energy and resources to enhance the facility as a Performing Arts Center that can bring even more entertainment, educational and cultural events to Monterey.

The theater has been used by local theater groups, The Monterey Jazz Festival and The Monterey Blues Festival. Classical music events have included The Monterey Symphony, Ensemble Monterey and The Monterey Opera Association. The theater recently presented an International Film Festival, and regularly schedules classic films.

There are facilities to project multispeed 35 mm, 16 mm and video. The booth is changeover style with dolby, dolby digital, and dts sound capability. The proscenium is 36 feet wide, and there are dressing rooms, and modern light and sound systems. 75% of the seating is new, 25% restored vintage seats. There is an unusual amount of extra space in the buiding, including offices, four retail stores, a restaurant, and a 3500 square foot open space ballroom.

Notable Performances at The Golden State Theatre have included: Garrison Keillor, Bill Cosby, The Smothers Bros., Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight, Willie Nelson, The Kingston Trio, Lily Tomlin, kd lang, Lyle Lovett, Hall & Oates, Weird Al Yankovic, and BB King.

This is indeed sad. It opens the door for anyone to step in and buy the theatre for the property value. I am deeply saddened that Warren Dewey has put this theatre in such a vulnerable state. So much for people supposedly committed to protecting these historic landmarks

Any one who buys it will not show movies. Great place for a Hotel. The Stanford Theatre people need to buy it and show movies and rent out to music people. Save the State Theatre! Monterey has so much money with the tourist and local $$$. Can you imagine the people at Century/Cinemark Theatres buying the place and chopping it up to 5 little art deco screens so they have a venue in dowtown Monterey!
