Later this year, after Martin Scorsese’s new film “Shutter Island” comes and goes at the movies and comes out on Blu-ray and DVD, it will be 20 years since his hit movie “Goodfellas” came out. At the time of its release, the two-and-a-half hour movie had more than 300 uses of a popular swear word, had an all star cast, and made back its $25 million budget and thrived as a popular movie on TV as well as on DVD and Bluray and VHS. The popularity of this movie spawned other mob movies of the decade, and reinvigorated the genre as a whole.

At the time of GOODFELLAS release during the Fall of 1990, gangster films had a surge in popularity – THE GODFATHER-PART III, MILLER’S CROSSING and KING OF NEW YORK were also released.

“Go fetch my shine box!”

“MO————-R!”

Anyway, it’s official 20th anniversary isn’t until September 21st. But yes, happy 20th. And I myself will turn 20 next saturday.

Great movie! Quite possibly my favorite of everything Scorsese has made.

I recall seeing “GoodFellas” first-run at the AMC Marina Pacifica 6 and saw it a second time in ‘91 at the GCC Galaxy 6 during a “Warner Bros. Day” grand-opening retrospective. However, my most vivid recollections of seeing it were from numerous laserdisc viewings during the 1990s. Oddly, I never have bought it on DVD or Blu-ray.

I saw it opening weekend in Westhampton Beach, Long Island on a very rainy Saturday evening.

Actually, in some U.S. markets it opened on Wednesday, September 19 (1990).
