    Anniversary show at the Carlisle

CARLISLE, PA — Auditions are currently underway for the 70th Anniversary show at the Carlisle Theatre.

Currently under development, the show will feature music, dance and historical facts from the seven decades the old movie house has witnessed since it first opened as the Comerford in 1939.

The goal is to take the audience back to a simpler time when cell phones did not exist, space travel was newfangled, Burma Shave signs graced two-lane highways and families gathered around the TV Sunday night to watch Ed Sullivan.

Mighty Wurlitzer is star of Paramount’s Silent Movie Mondays

SEATTLE, WA — Silent Movie Mondays at the Paramount Theatre feature the city’s last vintage theater organ.

An octogenarian is still going strong at the Paramount Theatre, the last of Seattle’s 1920s theater organs still fulfilling its original purpose. The Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ, built in 1927 and bought by the theater for $46,500, can be heard Mondays this month as part of Silent Movie Mondays, played in accompaniment to classic 1920s silent films.

“It’s really unique — it’s the only one left in the city of Seattle in its original home,” said Tom Blackwell, outgoing president of the Puget Sound Theatre Organ Society. “At one time there were 45 theaters within the Seattle city limits that had pipe organs in them. These were considered standard equipment for theaters that had silent films in the 1920s.

Obama inauguration to air in theaters

A great promotion is going on to help people see the Obama’s Inauguration in movie theaters for free.

President-elect Barack Obama is on his way to the big screen, thanks to a deal between MSNBC and Screenvision that will put the news channel’s inaugural coverage in 27 theaters around the country.

Free tickets are being handed out via MSNBC.com to see the inauguration and parade from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. ET at the 27 theaters run by 11 exhibitor partners in 21 markets. Midday Tuesday isn’t necessarily a big movie time, so it helps to fill the theater — and boost popcorn and soda sales — at a time when it’s not usually busy.
