KGordonMurray, I actually spoke to Jerry this past summer. He is still tickin. I plan on calling him before Christmas. I will send along a Hello for you.
I saw the show on Nov 8. Second mezzanine. I noticed the same thing about the santa ride. But I do agree having the images on the ceiling is great. But friends of mine sitting second row from the stage did not see the ceiling images without turning completely around
Most likely the point is money. I see it all the time at the one venue where I am a projectionist. Cost $250.00 to ship a 35MM print. Cost $4.95 to get a digital copy. And Im sure to ship 70MM must cost a fortune. Plus anybody can start can digital. You need people who know what they are doing to run 70MM.
There will be 4 movies upcoming in 35MM. E.T. from 1982 will be shown on Sat Nov 24. There will also be one each in Jan, Feb and March in 2019. Im told they will try to do a movie a month. Check the website for more details.
To answer the question about the 70MM projector. It is owned by and is the property of Warner Bros Pictures. It was last installed in Cinema 2, the Loews Theatre. As of the last showings I had in March it was staying in that theatre and Warners did not want it moved in the future. This can change I guess in the future, but as of now, the 70MM projectors I oversee are here in Lincoln Square, cinema 2, Regal E Walk Cinema 12 and Garden State 16 Cinema 15.
While working at the arena yesterday, I took a walk by the paramount where they are getting ready for a new Warner Brothers film shoot next week. They took the “K” off of Newark on the marquee. The workers said its because they cant have Newark in the film. They will also be shooting on the road by the Adams theatre.
Well with managers having to take care of booth duties these days, I guess they just don’t have time to take care of old xenon bulbs and other projection issues.
thehorror13, simple answer. Less maintenance. No motors to burn out. No pulleys getting stuck on tracks. I hate it too, since in all my 42 years as a projectionist, Im use to masking. Its just another byproduct of digital. With film, masking could cover any imperfections with the projector aperture. Digital gives you nice straight ridged lines.
alpinedownhiller thanks again. When I ran H8 and Dunkirk at the Regal E Walk for almost 3 weeks each, as well as Murder on The Orient Express for 4 weeks and Phantom Thread for 11 weeks at this theatre, all the prints went back dirt free and scratch free. Its what I do.

Well it wont be long before protesters will be out picketing. Another wholesome show gonna go down the tubes because of p.c.
Looks like the last few rows haven’t seen traffic in years.
That would explain it. Exactly what it looks like, 3 separate panels.

Took the one hour tour today. What a beauty. Glad to see this was never demolished.
moviebuff82, I was more asking if there are any still operating as NA/showcase cinemas.
With the closing of this theatre, are there any National Amusements/Showcase cinemas left in New jersey?
35MM print of E T was inspected today. Almost brand new. Universal Vault Print.

To correct one thing I posted above, the 70MM was moved from the Loews Theatre 1 to the Kings theatre 2, where it will now stay.

Theatre will close after last shows this sunday Nov 4. Theatre sold to owners of The Showroom on Asbury Park.
I was hoping First Man would have been put out on 5/70MM film. I would have had a shot at running it, ad I think film would have given it real depth.
Went to the 2 pm 50th anniversary showing of “Bullitt” in Cinema 11. Looked and sound awesome. Love these fathom events.
HowardBHass only the K is off. It now reads NEWAR.

NYer, that would be so awesome. Too bad it wont happen.
I read on a facebook link it going to be retail. How sad.

It was an RKO-Stanley Warner, and an RKO Century Warner before closing up.
