Is this theatre still open? The web site no longer exists.

I believe that 173 Tremont is the address not of the Loews Boston Common (and formerly the Tremont/Astor theatre), but rather of the building on the other side of Avery Street.

When did this open?

but presumably the federal employees do not need it on Friday evenings and weekends, which is when that shuttle bus ran.

Does the Westwood Village business association no longer run a shuttle bus from the Federal Building parking lot to the Village? When I lived in the area, that seemed like an ideal solution to the parking issues. (Plus, it’s not that long a walk from the Federal Building to the Village anyway.)

What is the current status of this theatre? Will I be able to visit it when I come to Columbus in two weeks?

Who was this theatre named for?

I don’t know how “Sack 57th Street” got into the Description above, but it is not correct. It was the “Sack 57” or the “Cinema 57”.

Also, only one of the former two cinemas is now the Stuart Street Playhouse. As mentioned several times in the comments, the other former cinema is now an indoor golf school.

Whalom is not the name of an a actual town in Massachusetts.

Not a ghost town, but are there any movie theatres left (as opposed to live stages)?

Ron Newman commented about Circle Cinemas on Jul 6, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Yes it’s closed. But the ART was scouting it out as a possible temporary location for an immersive live show. See the last few comments above yours, starting in December 2008.

American Repertory Theatre is definitely putting on a Punchdrunk show next season, but it will not be Faust. It will be “Sleep No More, an immersive production inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, told through the lens of a Hitchcock thriller.”

Whether it will take place at the Circle, I don’t know. The ART’s web page says only “An extraordinary, unexpected location will be exquisitely transformed into an installation of cinematic scenes that evoke the world of Macbeth.” I guess they’ll announce the actual location some time in the fall.

How did there come to be Cinerama in such a non-urban area?

As of June 10, the Brattle Theatre now sells beer from Cambridge Brewing Company. They will soon begin selling wine as well.

Glad to hear all of this news. Will you need to close the main theatre while any of this work is done?

Any idea whether the restored theatre can accommodate movies?

Seems like the Function should be changed from ‘Unknown’ to ‘Office Space’.

You might find such schedules in advertisements in the Boston Phoenix and Real Paper, which are archived at the Boston Public Library.

Ron Newman commented about A new twist on outdoor theaters on Jun 14, 2009 at 6:51 pm

I see 0% chance that a few outdoor screenings of old movies are going to have any effect on theatres that show new releases.

After looking up the several other businesses shown in that photo, and scoring a hit on ‘Dario Woodworking’, I have concluded that the photo shows the Fairmount Theatre in Hyde Park. I’ve added an appropriate link and comment to that page.

Ron Newman commented about Fairmount Theatre on Jun 11, 2009 at 10:29 pm

This appears to be a photo of the Fairmount from August or September 1983, when it was apparently renamed ‘Premier Performance Theatre’. The marquee advertises both an upcoming live stage show (Deathtrap) and a movie double-feature (The Warriors and Flashdance).

The Mystic Chorale, a ‘non-profit, volunteer run community chorus’, occasionally perform at Tremont Temple. I attended one of their shows last weekend.

No, definitely not. I’m not immediately recognizing the location in this photo, and question whether it is actually in Boston.

You’ll want to visit the newly reopened Lincoln Theatre in Columbus. For earlier restorations in Columbus, check out the Ohio, Palace, and Southern theatres (all downtown).
