As I stated before, I did go to Newark. This theater is still there and is now a church. I did not get inside, but I did take photos of the exterior which are at http://www.cinematour.com/tour.php?db=us&id=31433 .

Word of advice: don’t build a single screen. You can’t make it in the business with a single screen nowadays. That is why all modern cinemas are multiplexes. If you are building new I’d think you’d want a minimum of five screens. If you have your heart set on a single screen it would be better to find one that already exists and fix it up.

Was this the same as the Strand Theatre? The Strand (404 S Orange Ave) is on the corner of S Orange and 12th.

This may be demolished. There’s some sort of hall (Elks or something like that) at 188. I’m not sure if that was the theatre, or if the theatre was the building next door which is now demolished.

I was just in Newark yesterday to photographs cinemas. The building at 800 Broad St. looks much newer, not like a repurposed theatre. I think this one may have been demolished with a new structure built in its place.

This theatre was mentioned in the July 3, 1937 issue of Box Office magazine as running an occasional Hungarian film at that time.

The latest news (from two months ago) is that instead of renovating this into a three screen complex by adding two more screens in other parts of the building it will be kept a one screen theatre with only the original auditorium due to financial reasons.

Use maps.live.com and do the birdseye view. It seems the theatre is still there! Look at the building in red. It seems like a small lobby building with along tunnel leading to an auditorium. I’ll be there next week to take photos and see for sure, but this pretty positively looks like a theatre.

Correct address was 182 Belmont Avenue. Belmont Avenue is now Irvine Turner Blvd.

Roger Katz commented about Showcase Cinemas Orange on Dec 10, 2008 at 3:44 am

UI is the electric company in southern CT.

No other theater chain will buy any former Showcase Cinemas because Showcase will not sell the properties to anyone who would operate them as a cinema.

Roger Katz commented about Showcase Cinemas Milford on Sep 27, 2008 at 2:21 pm

It is owned by National Amusements. As with all their other closed theatres (East Hartford, East Windsor, Orange, etc.) they will not sell it to anyone who wants to operate a cinema.

This is already listed as /theaters/16961/ – not sure why it was listed again, but this listing should be deleted.
