The Surf is on Collins about 73rd. The Collins Ave theater is part of the Deauville hotel on 67th and Collins. It was created for showcase singers. There opening show many years ago was Vicki Carr. The theater didn’t last very long. It is still part of the hotel and is used during conventions for meetings and other things. The Surf still has the original screen where they do show movies from time to time while memebrs work out.

I saw Man Of La MAncha at the Boyd aka SamEric and I remember the screen being curved even tho it was ont he stage. Was this the original Cinerama screen than? Years later when I went back and saw GWTW in 70mm the screen was large, but the flat screen that remained for years.

I see you have posted on most of the AC theaters that it lists in the FDY as GG theaters. What is FDY? George Hamid leased the theaters to a company called GG and they ran them until 1973. I think the last year for the Shore was 1971.

The Shore was very plain, it had no masking or curtains.

The SHore also didn’t have 965 seats. It had a small downstairs and small balcony. I think the most it held was 300-400. Of course I am going back to 1969 when I saw Oliver there.

Hey TC. That photo does not look like the Shore. It was right off the corner. The postcard shows a different marquee that what they last had. The Shore was no place near city hall.

I posted the first comment. I just knew some right wing idot (gee is this Bush posting something under a false name he lies about everything else)would start up on the gay issue. Nobody pushed Brokeback down your throat or anybody elses. I think the acadamy showed they are not hoomophobic or prejudice by awarding both films.
All rights groups like the Christian, ACLU groups all fight towrd getting people to accept what they believe. People should accept what they want.

Crash was not a big surprise or was it the biggest upset in Acadamy history. For once the acadamy voted Best Picture to a film that truly deserved it. I am a gay man and from the day the nomintaions came out I said Crash was the best film I had seen last year. Had I been an acadamy voter, I would have voted the way all the awards went last night except for Best Supporting Actress. I felt Catherine Keener was much better than Rachel Weiz.

You can update information on this theater. It was knocked down many years ago and is a parking lot for Asheville Savings Bank.

Is Charles Tannenbaum still the owner of thsi theater? When I lived in AC and worked at the bank he was one of my customers. I know he lost all his other theaters.

Hello Dolly had a 70MM release I saw in 78 at the Cinerama. It was great seeing it on that great huge curved screen they had. The sound was great too.

Could it be the film was in scope an they don’t have scope screen? I say that because there is a theater here in Asheville( Regal Hollywood 14 which was oringally independantly owned by a family)that does not have scopr screens. I never liked that theater and Sat night I finally asked a manager if they had capability of showing scope and she said only in one theater. The other theaters were built with flat screens and you really loose the scope effect becuase anything extra is on the side walls and above the screen. I was pissed to say the least.

The gay lifestyle is not destructive. What is destructive is homophobia in this country. Based on the time frame 63-83, this culd have been a heterosexual story about an interracial couple who would have probibly done the same thing.

I hope that someone would come in about lease this theater. I also found it interesting that Loews theaters are being listed as AMC/Loews. I hope this means AMC has decieded to keep the Loews name.

Hey all, I am changing my mind on my above post. After seeing Brokeback Mountain again last night at a theater where I could actually hear the dialouge, it is the best picture of the year. I missed so much the first time seeing it at this independant theater in Asheville. It has moved to Regal/UA and the picture and sound was great.

Maybe Clearview will ocme in and reopen the State. I know the NY Twin was closed by Loews and after a while it was reopened as Crown NY Twin. How Clearview obtained it and why I am not sure.

Maybe they feel that Loews has so much history behind it, that they may just keep that name.

Brokeback Mountain leads the Oscar nominations. I will say this. If I was an acadamy voter I would vote Ang Lee, best director, but my best picture vote would go to Crash. In my opinion it was one of the best films last year. It deserved the cast ensamble it won at the SAG awards Sunday. I am gay and loved Brokeback, but feel that Crash really was the best film of 2005. It also deals with racism, but in a different way.

You should check out the Asheville area. We could use a stadium theater in the area. Asheville has none. Epic opened a great stadium theater in Hendersonville which is about 20 miles from Asheville. Asheville has some terrible theaters. Carmike 10 is one of the worst run theaters in this area. Also, Regal Hollywood 14 is the pits. The screens are so small they don’t even show films in scope. South Asheville near the airport is a new upcoming area and would be a great location ofr a new theater.

I am a big theater fan but I totally dislike this theater. They will not sell advance tickets. They sell tickets 30 min prior to showtime. To see Brokeback MOuntain I had to arrive 75 minutes early to wait in a long line. I got in and got seats but was so frustared that I didn’t enjoy the movie as much as I could. I am going back to the UA Beaucatcher Thursday to see it. It has hit all the main stream theaters here including the new Epic in Hendersonville. They said they did very well with it Friday night and early Sat. Do you live in Asheville? If so email me Mikearden1 @aol.com. Just put Cinema Treasures on the subject line so I don’t deleted you as spam.

I just went to AMC/Loews web site and it is definately not listed. Any chance Clearview or another chain would take it over? Also, I noticed the AMC web site is showing AMC/Loews,Magic JOhnson. Any chance they are keeping the Loews name?

You need to update some more information. The theater holds only 250. The main auditorium holds 175 and the upstairs balcony theater holds 75. Also this theater was originally named the Strand. It was changed in the 90’s when it became a porno theater. It ran as a porno theater until the late 90’s or early 00.
