Needs an update in the description above and also to be placed in the demolished category that it was demolished in Sept 2023 to make way for the Belle Oaks project.

I drove by it the other day and the west wall was partially still up. So even though the demolition started around November 12th, it was still going on a month later till around December 14-15th.

I created the entry for this theater but it should now be changed from OPEN to CLOSED since it has moved down the street to a new building, and somebody has already created an entry for it. I’m not sure if I can manually change it or if an administrator from this website has to.

Adamthemoviefan,

You are correct. This theater was built exactly where that J.C. Penny was. Luckily I went there a few years back to snap some photos of all the scenes shown in the Dawn Of The Dead film.

ChasSmith,
I believe this Eastgate theater was the first in the area, built in 1996, so I don’t think this is the one you are thinking of. My guess is it was either at the old Severance Theater, or one of the ones listed here under “nearby theaters” on the right side of this page.

this theater has been run by the independent chain Atlas Cinemas for some time now so the “Operated By” needs to be updated. here’s a link: http://boxoffice.printtixusa.com/atlas/movies?v=4964

after 29 years, the beloved Cinematheque will be moving out of its location on East Boulevard into the new Peter B. Lewis Theater inside the brand new 80,000 square foot Cleveland Institute of Art facility on Euclid Ave in the Uptown neighborhood, not too far from the old CIA building, which was sold to the Cleveland Museum of Art & Case Western University. Movies will start screening there on August 1st.

The Boneyard closed early last summer after about an 8 year run and the space is now called Play Arcade and Kitchen.

UPDATE: I’m sad to announce that this theater just closed down for good on Feb 24th. It needed to convert to digital but it couldn’t afford to so it was forced to close. Here is a tribute I wrote for it on facebook:

I just found out that the famous Willoughby Hills Movies 10 theatre aka “The Dollar Show” has closed down this past weekend after nearly a quarter century in business (first as Cinemark, then Phoenix). That theater opened in Fall 1990 when I was in third grade. I grew up right around the block from it, so I was there ALL THE TIME for most of the 90s, esp in the summers when me and my bro Adam would ride our bikes there to play the arcade games then see the same good & shitty movies over and over for only a dollar. I continued goin to this theater up till last year, if I had missed a movie during it’s first run or I didn’t feel like paying $9 to see it lol. I probably saw hundreds of films here (more than any other theater) and it shaped my love & appreciation for film which has grown each year, so I will forever be grateful. I saw Jurassic Park here in 1993 and it changed my life. I will miss you dollar show & Front Row Joe….

I was at the Centrum again on March 27th as part of a improv comedy workshop for a few hrs. I performed on the stage and afterwards I took a peak behind the curtain and the screen is definately still there lol.

I was at the Centrum last night to see the Cleveland improv comedy troupe Something Dada perform. For those wondering, The theater looks exactly the same inside as when it closed, so nothing was changed. The group performed in front of the screen(curtains were closed so I couldn’t see it) on the stage area.

this theater has been renovated and is re-opening as Big Dog Theater on Feb 19, 2011. It is now going to showcase sketch, improv, and standup comedy in the Cleveland area. It is also to be a training facility studio for comedians to take classes and workshops. They even give you the option to rent the auditorium out, so I guess you can still view movies here (but probably just privately) since the theater itself is still intact (you can see pics of it on the website, which I have listed below. Check out the site, for it has more info than I posted).

Personally I think the Cleveland Cinematheque is a good name for it since everyone calls it by that (and not by its Auditorium name, which I’ve never heard uttered). But after reading your comment I can see your point and on being technical, so I won’t be mad if you do change the actual name. BUT if you do, please include the name Cleveland Cinematheque clearly in the description or in the “also known as” above the title lol. Should we vote?

and here’s a link to the Cinematheque’s blog:

Here’s a link confirming it re-opened on November 9, 2010 (and not the 10-11th like I originally thought) It closed just before or just after Halloween so it was only closed for just over a week and not 2 weeks:

Hey when you update those 3 things you mentioned above I think you should also change it to “Willoughby Hills Movies 10” since when you click on the link I provided you can see in the picture that MOVIES is written on the building. Plus Everyone I know calls it Movies 10 and not Willouhby Hills 10. I realize you have a variation of that name in the “also known as” above the main title, but Phoenix Theaters Willoughby Hills Movies 10 sounds almost too long huh? As long as Phoenix and Cinemark are under the “chain” /former chain sections all is well, anyone agree?

This is a nice theater but if you didn’t know it was there you would never find it because it’s literally behind the Eastgate Plaza hidden from sight. When you drive down SOM Center Rd you would never know a theater was right there lol. I don’t even think there’s a advertising sign (but I may be wrong).

The first film I recall seeing here was The Phantom Menace in 1999.

Eric K. commented about Connor Palace Theatre on Jan 13, 2011 at 10:22 pm

Just wanted to point out that every year since 1998 the Palace Theater has hosted the “Cinema At The Square” classic film series every August for only $5 bucks each. In 2010 they played 16 films, dating from mostly the 1930s-1980s.

Eric K. commented about Cedar-Lee Theatre on Jan 13, 2011 at 10:09 pm

Just wanted to mention that The Cedar-Lee (& now The Capitol Theatre)have hosted for the last few years what is now called The Melt Bar & Grilled Late Shift series which shows great cult films of the 70s-90s. It runs Jan-Dec, 1 film a month (so 12 films a year) which screen at 9:30pm and Midnight, and only costs $5. I always end up going to at least half of them, this month was Full Metal Jacket for example. The series was originally called The Cult Film Series, then Cleveland Cinemas Late Shit, and now the title I mentioned earlier is named from its new sponsor, a corner bar/restaurant called Melt Bar & Grilled.

You are right on your observation. Since I frequent it so much I felt that it should have its own entry so I hastily created a page for it late last night. Perhaps I should have put more thought into its despription lol; and I realize I originally forgot about the other auditorium, so thanks for editing that. But there is no denying it shows GREAT films, many are rare prints, and from time to time they have the filmmakers themselves speak about their films. There is a bi-monthly catalog with all the screenings and showtimes that you can get mailed to you or pick up in select bookstores and coffee shops.

Eric K. commented about Euclid Avenue Outdoor Theatre on Jan 11, 2011 at 9:17 pm

I can’t confirm, but this theater might be a part of my first conscious memory that I can place a date to lol. Summer of 1984 My parents took me to see Ghostbusters at a drive-in (I was 2.5 yrs old, I’m 29 now), and I believe it to be this one considering its location. I grew up on Brush Road which was near the old K-Mart at the intersection of Richmond Rd & Euclid Ave. I know for a fact it wasn’t the Mayfield Road Drive-In, but it’s possible it was the Eastlake Drive-In, but I have a feeling it was this one. The only thing I actually remember about this was we were sitting in a car and I remember the scene near the beginning in the library when the ectoplasm is oozing and the papers are flying around lol. That’s all I wanted to say…

I only went to this theater one time. My dad took me here to see Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, in 1991 (I was about 9). I think it closed down not too long after.

It was a Designer Show Warehouse for years. Then in 2009 half of this plaza was torn down (including DSW) and became a parking lot for the Aldi’s grocery store they built in the back.

As a kid I went to the comic book shop Northcoast Nostalgia which was pretty much next door all the time (this is about 1994-1998). Since the building it was in was torn down as well, Northcoast moved its operations not very far at all; it is now in the plaza in the back adjacent to the Aldi’s.
