This theater is open? What is it used for?
The Hempstead Theater at 740 12th Street was built in 1979. It’s a single screen theater which still has the original Century projector, a very reliable one. I was told by the previous owner that Hempstead has had a continuious theater since the 1920s, which makes it the second longest continuious business in Hempstead. The photo provided by Lost Memories was of the old theater at the corner of 290 Bus. and Hwy 6 long torn down. It’s a great picture. I wish the owners of this site would correct the discrepancy.
So there were two Hempstead Theaters in Hempstead and the one at the above address is the newer of the two. Thanks for clearing this up.
Thank you Cinema Treasures for updating my theater as open, but there is one more slight discrepancy. The seating capacity is 210, not 450. This theater was designed and built by the previous owners Jimmy & Doris Needham. I will provide a photo as soon as the site starts allowing it.
This is a very comprehensive site, listing a huge number of theaters.
Thank again Cinema Treasures
