The Avon Cinema designed by Llewellyn Williams, opened on 15th May 1935 with a seating capacity of 943. In the early 1950’s it was operated by Christchurch Cinemas Ltd. in association with Kerridge-Odeon. The Avon Cinema closed in September 1989.

When the cinema closed, the building was used as a church. After the church moved, the building then stood empty for a number of years. Today the building is occupied by the Holy Grail Sports Bar.

As a result of the 2010/11 earthquakes, sadly the wreckers ball has arrived at this former cinema.
