The Gem Theater was opened in February of 1914 by O.C. Hauber. Around 1917 the Gem became the Miller Theater. The name was later changed to the Strand Theater.

The Strand Theater is still listed in 1955.

This is a circa 1915 photo of the Gem Theater.

LM. Looks like a drug store at that site now, but a different building.

It’s possible that the address is off by a few numbers. A drugstore is currently located at 201 South Main Street and a drugstore has been there for decades. The theater should be the building on the other corner. This is an undated photo that shows the building where the theater was located on the left and a drugstore on the right.

The Historical Society magazine mentions another theatre with Mr. Hauber’s name sake, Hauber Theatre on Second & Pine, It says that the theatre was in operation from 1911 thru 1921, but that is all that it mentions about the theatre. It also mentions a Palace Theatre in the same paragraph but does not go on to give any detail on the Palace.

LM’s first post link doesn’t work for me. The only difference I see is they took a dash out of their pbjclibrary website name.

The pictures says the Gem / Miller / Strand was at E. 2nd and State St. Nothing is there at that corner any longer except some empty lots or new construction.

The drugstore mentioned above is at 2nd St and Main. The picture linked above on 2/12/09 shows a building with vastly different windows up top.

Just down the street across from the Community Theater (207 W. 2nd) would have been the AMUSE-U Theater (208 W. 2nd St.)

A busy couple of blocks for theater back then.

So according to the article the Hauber Theatre became the Saenger Theatre. Did I read that correctly?
