Picture Palace

Small cinema located in the main street of Troedyrhiw. Probably opened in the 1920’s, it was certainly in operation since at least 1937 and had a 22 feet wide proscenium. Always independently operated, it was on the June 1955 FTS (Cardiff) distribution list, but had closed by 1963.

I was born in Troedyrhiw in 1937..and I visited the cinema on Mondays and Thursday every week for 30 years….2 different shows every week..The main feature about 2-3 hours long and the shorty about 1 hour long..then Pathe News of course…so it was still in operation in the 60’s.

My father,Glyndwr Norman, a coalminer, was the projectionist from 1950 to 1966..The owners name was “Harry Lucas”..He was 300 years old..Well thats what he told us kids..Afterall he was a saviour
